Samenvatting

The objective of this project was to analyze and better understand how drivers use both video- and sonar-based backing aids. Motor vehicle manufacturers are increasingly installing backing aid devices on vehicles and it is currently unclear if these devices are useful for reliably detecting objects located behind vehicles and whether drivers use the devices as intended. The goal of this study was to better understand how drivers use these devices and if the devices provide useful information to drivers. In this study, three backing aids were analyzed; two of the aids were video-based systems and one aid was a sonar-based system (auditory). Drivers’ reactions while performing the backing manoeuvres were measured to determine whether the aids were used appropriately. (Author/publisher)
