Creating sustainable transport systems does not only require integrative concepts on the tuning of transport and land use. Sustainability also requires forms of collaboration between engineers and planners. Professionals that mostly base their work on the core knowledge of their field can have trouble with such approaches of their job. This article describes the preliminary outcomes of a project that aims at inducing collaboration, through education and training. The project is initiated by the Dutch National Platform for Local Governments on Traffic and Transport (KpVV). The project focusses on the competencies needed for an effective collaboration between transport engineers and physical planners. The project discusses the course of some successful planning processes and analyses the factors that led to success. The outcome of the analysis will be translated into an advise on the renewal of education and training. The advise is not only directed to the universities and the academies. It also addresses the planning bureaus and the consultancy firms. The way in which new functionaries are integrated into the organisations and the procedures along which the planning projects and the transport projects are created have great influence on the outcomes of the projects as well. (Author/publisher) Nederlands abstract: De verbetering van de afstemming tussen mobiliteit en ruimte vereist niet alleen integrale planningconcepten over transportnetwerken en ruimtelijke inrichting. Het vraagt ook om vormen van gecommitteerde samenwerking tussen ingenieurs en planologen. Voor verkeerskundigen en planologen die vooral vakmatig zijn georiënteerd is dat niet vanzelfsprekend omdat dat buiten de routine van het werk valt. Dit artikel beschrijft een project dat de gecommitteerde samenwerking tussen hen wil bevorderen door middel van opleiding en training. Het initiatief van het project ligt bij het Programma Ruimte&Mobiliteit van het Kennisplatform Verkeer en Vervoer. Het project Opleiding en Beroepspraktijk Verkeerskundigen brengt de competenties in beeld die nodig zijn voor een succesvolle samenwerking tussen verkeerskundigen en ruimtelijke planners. Het project maakt een analyse van het verloop van werkprocessen en van de factoren die daarin tot succes hebben geleid. De uitkomsten worden vertaald naar een advies over versterking van opleiding en training. Dat advies richt zich op het onderwijs door universiteiten, hogescholen en trainingsinstellingen en op de begeleiding en in-company training van verkeerskundigen en ruimtelijke planners binnen overheidsdiensten en adviesbureaus.
