The study aimed to validate the DSI (Driver Stress Inventory) against self-reports of accidents and convictions, driving behaviour and coping, in British and North American samples. The Driver Behaviour Questionnaire was used to assess self-reports of potentially hazardous behaviours. A 3-item preferred speed scale validated against objective driving speed by West, French, Kemp and Elander (1993) is also included. It was predicted that Aggression and Thrill-seeking should be the scales most strongly related to hazardous behaviours, and to maladaptive coping strategies. Finally, a general personality questionnaire was included in the study to verify that the DSI dimensions were distinct from existing personality dimensions.
