The paper describes the reasons for introducing the compulsory annual inspection of goods vehicles in Great-Britain and gives details of the facilities provided at Government-owned and operated stations for carrying out the work. The scheme is to start on 1st October 1968 and involves the inspection of over three quarters of a million vehicles per year. Details are given of the method by which vehicles are to be allotted plated weights above which it will be illegal for them to operate and the extent of the mechanical fitness examination. A full description is given of the layout and dimensions of the inspection lanes and the equipment provided at stations. Information on the appointment system employed and the fees charged is also given.
