Samenvatting

A simplified view of the concept of the maintenance problem in Great Britain and of the present organization of highway maintenance is presented. The necessary requirements from a management system are discussed. The management system must insure that (1) the aims of the organization are carried out and that unnecessary work or expenditure is not incurred, (2) the quality and amount of work meets the aims, and (3) value is obtained for the money spent. Establishment of maintenance standards over the whole range of conditions in Great Britain is considered to be the first priority task.
