Samenvatting

IRIS is a concept for individual public transport travel information by a mobile phone. The IRIS concept gives a blueprint for a nationally available system that could be available in five to ten years when new technologies like UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) and mobile internet will be common on the one hand. On the other hand, the concept gives a grip on how this blueprint can be realised step by step in co-operation with all relevant parties involved. The philosophy is starting simple and take further steps by proven success. The main dimensions of the IRIS concept are: (1) personalised: according to the preferences and wishes of each individual traveller; (2) actual: knowing where the vehicles are all the time; and (3) location-based: knowing where the traveller is. In this paper, an overview is given of activities related to the IRIS initiative. These activities are mainly carried out by TNO Inro, TNO TPD, OC Mobility Coaching and Ericsson. IRIS is financed by several parties from the public transport sector, the government and interest groups. The founding of KIROV ('core group integrated travel information for public transport') is of eminent importance, since it shows the sectors' interest clearly. Realisation of pilot projects is also important. Examples of them are the HTM (The Hague), Syntus (East Gelderland), the Phileas in Eindhoven and Maastricht (local bus).
