Samenvatting

This paper gives an overview of the concept of behaviour regulation, behaviour acquisition and behaviour adaptation as researched for the European Commission GADGET project. This attempted to adapt the models of behaviour therapists for use in analysing driver behaviour and the effect of safety measures. Three levels were identified: the condition of the driver, principles of behaviour regulation, and adaptation processes caused by consequences of behaviour. These were further broken down into seven factors influencing driving. This concept may offer a structured approach to show how the aspects of driver behaviour and related models are linked. Driver behaviour is seen as a category of behaviour subject to the main mechanisms of behaviour regulation and adaptation, but in specific conditions not shared with other behavioural issues.
