Samenvatting

This paper describes a method which was developed to analyze driver behaviour in real driving situations. It uses an instrumented car which could measure the following indicators: a) time; b) distance; c) driving speed; and d) driver's use of the brake. A video recording of the visual scene encountered on the driver's route was made at the same time as the measurements made with the car. Afterwards, the values of the indicators were projected onto the video screen. All subjects were required to pass through 5 intersections, four of which were on a main road with central islands at each intersection, and the other on a secondary road with no island. The adjustments in speed executed by the drivers at the 5 junctions were analyzed. In-depth interviews were also conducted with each subject after the journey using two types of visual aid: the presentation of the video recording of their journey and slides of different scenarios of interaction with other users at the junctions studied. Two groups of drivers participated: a) 12 experienced motorists; and b) 10 novice drivers. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the driving behaviour of the two groups on main roads. However, on secondary roads, the experienced drivers modified their speed significantly at the intersection, while the novice drivers did not.
