This paper describes a Swiss scheme for further training of novice drivers after a first driving test had been passed. It was established that young drivers (18-24 years) often lost control of their car or had an actual accident or speeding fine within the first year after the possession of a driving licence. Mostly they saw this as the fault of other drivers. Although they approved the concept of further training they thought this should be mostly practical in nature. A course structure was planned to include both theoretical and practical training sessions and to include a social element. Practical exercises were organised in such a way as to avoid the possibility of students becoming over-confident in dangerous situations. The course aimed to encourage students to evaluate their own risk-taking behaviour and generate their own strategies against this. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113725 (C 22328 CD-ROM).
