Samenvatting

This article presents the physiological effects of alcohol on the human nervous system and on the individual's ability to drive an automobile. The increase in alcohol-related accidents in South Africa is discussed, together with the problem of the courts in assessing whether the driver has an alcohol depedency or was merely acting irresponsble. It is suggested that the courts set up assessment center and employ more treatment and education to reduce repeated offenses of drunken driving.
