This paper intends to discuss the impacts of the urban transport fare policy on poverty reduction. A study for the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte has taken into account the elasticity concept (demand vs. fare) and the impact of fare structure on poor inhabitants. Both aspects represent a great progress on transport fare policy in Brazil. Nevertheless, the mobility of poor people has been decreased. Therefore, a more complete study should consider both direct and indirect subsidies. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116619.
