Design methods to optimize the binder quantity for mix seal surfacing (MSS) premix carpet (PMC) and two coat surface dressing (TCSD) with bitumen emulsion are presently not available in India. Therefore, the field trials using bitumen emulsion on Agra-Kolkata Road (NH-2) were conducted to optimize the binder quantity by performance monitoring of different wearing courses. The test sections were laid with reduced quantity of binder by 5, 10, 15 and 20 per cent of specified quantity for different bituminous surfacings to optimize binder quantity. The Marshall specimens were prepared, cured at 40 degrees Celsius for 3 days and tested at 25 degrees Celsius for stability and flow value. Post-construction performance evaluation has been carried out periodically each after six-month for more than 5 years duration. From the field study, it has been inferred that MSS, PMC and TCSD with bitumen emulsion performed better than paving 80/100 grade bitumen. It is also observed that reflection of cracks to overlays is retarded due to the use of bitumen emulsion. It was also found that 10 per cent binder economy can be achieved in MSS, PMC and TCSD while using bitumen emulsion in road construction.
