Samenvatting

In this study a verbally labelled racing scale for measuring perceived effort was constructed. To determine the scale values of the anchor points a psychophysical scaling method (magnitude estimation) was used. The hypothesis that the individual responses may be considered as expressions of one (latent) scale was tested using LISREL (Linear Structural Relationship) analysis. It was found that nearly all respondents, irrespective of educational background, place the items in the same relative position on an imaginary continuum. Therefore one might conclude that the verbal labels have more or less the same meaning to all subjects. The resulting scale is believed to have log-interval measurement characteristics.
