Samenvatting

The author writes from the point of view of a disabled traveller and considers the difficulties encountered in Canada. Areas are identified where particular improvements could be made and the role of the National Transportation Act 1987 discussed. Travelling experiences over a year are described which involve lack of communication, lack of training and lack of facilities. In considering improvements that could be carried out a need is identified for a great deal more information in a variety of media much of which would benefit the travelling public as a whole. The author considers the findings of recent workshops and studies on transport and mobility handicaps. The use of the provisions of the 1987 Act to make improvements to mobility is described. A need is identified in particular for personnel to be able to recognise disabilities and respond to them.
