Inland container shipping tempting? Consequent on the global growth of container shipping in recent years, inland container shipping in The Netherlands has grown as well. Large scale hinterland transport is indispensable to process this growth. From a governmental point of view large scale hinterland transport by inland container shipping is tempting because of the reduction of congestion and the reduction of environmental pollution. To merchants inland container shipping is tempting because of the relative low prices per kilometre. The Dutch government tries to unroll the growing transport of containers to the hinterland by inland container shipping through a policy of modal shift. For this purpose she tries to tempt by improvement of waterway infrastructure, research into improvement of storage and transhipment, stimulation of ICT (information and communication technology) and enlargement of operation of bridges and locks.
