Samenvatting

For the last half century, designers the world over have been under increasing pressure to find ways to better design urban roads to be compatible with and acceptable to local communities and supportive of transportation and other goals. Recent interest in complete streets, smart growth, and new urbanism have increased the interest in context sensitive roadway design. This paper summarizes the new design guide being developed for a partnership between ITE and the Congress for the New Urbanism. The guide, in the form of an ITE proposed recommended practice, will show principles, criteria, applications and examples of how to design major urban roads (arterials, collectors) within the standard criteria used by most transportation departments. Principal objectives of the guide are to provide for the needed multimodal mobility and safety while at the same time being compatible with and supporting adjoining development and activities.
