Samenvatting

An operator's control over his input sources-his attention-can be an important performance limitation in man-machine systems. A laboratory simulation of a car, following task is used to generate data on the subject's variations in attention to the lead vehicle as a function of inter-vehicle spacing. The subject's risk preference level and the ratio of the costs of collision to observation are independent variables. Normative models of equal probability of collision and minimum cost are provided for comparison.
