This paper is a summary of a research proposal prepared by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation and the National Public Services Research Institute and submitted to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for funding. Guardian Interlock Systems Corporation and the Driver Control Board of Alberta have also assisted in the development of this proposal and will be active participants in the research. The proposed research is comprised in two separate studies. The first examines the effectiveness of incorporating a case manager into the existing alcohol ignition interlock program for repeat DWI offenders. The second evaluates the effectiveness of alcohol ignition interlocks in preventing recidivism and alcohol-related crash involvement among first offenders. (Author/publisher)
