Techniques for increasing bus operating efficiency include both traffic management and fleet management. Applying and extending the technology for traffic surveillance and control is the principal technique considered in this paper, and it may also assist fleet management. The Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) system in the Lincoln tunnel is in particular described.
