The Copenhagen Metro is one of the first driverless Metros operating on a24/7 basis within a two-track system. Maintenance is carried out in four-hour time slots every night on one track, while the service is operated onthe other track. This is a huge challenge, demanding professionalism andskill from maintenance and operational management, technicians, control staff and maintenance workers. The new extension to the Metro is a circle line which is scheduled to open in 2018. Called Cityringen, it will run underground and consist of 17 stations covering major parts of the city centre and surrounding districts. Archaeological excavations and changes to thecity's utility grid will be undertaken first, followed by the construction of the extension. Copenhagen Metro has become the centre of international interest. It is technologically advanced and uses internationally well-proven techniques. The stations are designed in a classical, functional, Scandinavian style which blends in well with street level architecture. Passenger satisfaction has risen significantly in recent years, with safety, service and provision of passenger information being highly rated. Provision for passengers with special needs is also excellent. In recent years theMetro has won prestigious international awards.
