This paper describes the processes used to prioritise maintenance of steel bridges and the strategies which are used to maximise effectiveness and minimise cost. A number of case histories are used to demonstrate successful and not so successful approaches to asset management. The individual costs which make up the total expenditure of an effective structure management plan are discussed, and means of minimising each are proposed. The materials and processes used for the maintenance of structures are also considered. In particular, the range of coating systems available is wide and the merits of each approach are considered. In addition, a number of methods of preparing steel surfaces are discussed and recommendations provided. In summary, the paper provides guidelines for effective management of steel structures, whilst avoiding common pitfalls, for the asset manager.
