Samenvatting

The report provides indicative estimates of the cost of personal travel on the major mechanical modes of transport in major urban centres of Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney). The objective of the report is to inform members of the public and transport planners of the costs of travel so more informed decisions can be made about the use of travel modes and transport planning. Costs are reported in terms of average resource costs and divided into three groups (i) user cost - individual traveller costs, (ii) provider costs - cost borne by the service provider (usually government) and (iii) societal costs - external costs borne by the community in general. The report compares these costs for the different modes of transport and shows that user and societal costs are highest for car transport and provider costs are highest for public transport.
