The road safety situation in Israel since the 1950s is described. Between 1988 and 1997, there was a slight increase in the number of fatalities, but a decrease in the fatality rates per registered vehicles and vehicle-kilometers travelled. The Israeli level of motorisation is lower than that of many developed countries, but the fatality rate per population is higher. In 1997, the Israeli Parliament approved a law that identified road safety as a nationally important task. A National Road Safety Program was developed for the years 1999-2001. It identified the top ten safety issues for action. There has been a decrease in road accident numbers and casualties in 1999-2000.
