Samenvatting

Due to political and economic changes in the 1990s, Hungary has become a transit country - the situation of the country defines its tasks in the field of traffic engineering. A growing tendency in transport demand, with a strong increase in transit traffic during the next 5-10 years is expected. There is a need for integrated traffic management systems (collective as well as individual), using telematics to exploit the possibilities of a multi-phased implementation and giving a special importance to Public Private Partnership. The implementation of some collective traffic control systems is planned in the next years, individual information systems are operating with an experimental character only. The main technical conditions for the operation of the traffic control and information systems, as well as the know-how, already exist in Hungary; however, the background of the application of telematics in road transport has to be created. There is a need for technology transfer and a willingness for participation in the European research and development programs (EU, OECD, PIARC etc.).
