Samenvatting

There is limited information available on the crash risk associated with unsealed roads. In addition, there is a scarcity of information regarding specific crash types occurring on these roads. Although the majority of crashes occur on the sealed road network, a significant proportion of crashes occur on the unsealed network, and there is a need to investigate this issue, with the aim of identifying the extent of the current problem (including crash risk), likely causes of crashes, and possible countermeasures. With a significant proportion of the road network being unsealed, it is important to understand what factors lead to the occurrence of crashes in this environment, and what measures may be undertaken to minimise them. This study involved a literature review, crash analysis, site inspections and workshop and identifies factors that contribute to the occurrence and severity outcome of crashes occurring on unsealed roads across Australia and New Zealand. It also considers potential remedial road treatments to help reduce such crashes. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E217099.
