Graphic sign characteristics that best communicated roadway interchange and route guidance information to the driver was determined. Laboratory test indicated that graphic guide signs permitted significantly better route guidance performance than conventional signs on certain interchanges. Graphic signs also convey relative exit speeds and lane drop information effectively.
