VicRoads has recently produced a publication referred to as the Cultural Heritage Guidelines to assist practitioners in the assessment and management of cultural heritage. The guidelines and processes established are considered applicable for a number of local road projects and a summary is provided in this article as well as a case study. The VicRoads Guidelines cover cultural heritage assessment processes; statutory requirements for protection of indigenous and non-indigenous cultural heritage stakeholders; 3. consultation with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders regarding the identification and management of cultural heritage sites and places; 4. cultural heritage sites commonly encountered during road construction projects, 5. assessment of cultural significance; 6. development and implementation of management plans for cultural heritage sites and places within the context of road projects.
