The culture of Swedish drinking and driving legislation: A consideration of both formal and informal social control mechanisms.

Sweden has implemented one of the strictest drinking and driving laws in the western world. The deterrent value of this stringent approach has generated a great deal of debate and controversy. This paper argues that efforts to assess the impact of Swedish drinking and driving legislation should be incorporated into a broader sociological theory which would consider a greater range of extra- legal variables.
