Samenvatting

Road traffic in Japan induces traffic congestion, an increase of accidents and environmental problems due to noise and exhaust gas, while playing an important role as the foundation of the society that supports the livelihood of the nation and economic activities. VICS is a system that was developed in order to solve such road traffic problems by providing accurate information. The VICS Center was established in July 1995 to support safety and the smooth flow of traffic by efficient operation of social capital. Five years have passed since the distribution of VICS information was started for metropolitan areas including Tokyo Metropolitan, Tomei and Meishin Expressways in April 1996. This paper describes the "current condition of VICS" and "future objectives of VICS" in response to the diversification and advancement of user requirements and changes in the social environment.
