Current state of the steel-concrete composite slab in Japan.

The steel-concrete composite slab (hereafter called the composite slab) is to arrange mechanical shear connectors on a steel plate, and to composite the steel plate and ferroconcrete. This composite slab is developed as a bridge deck, and can be applied to long-span bridges. The steel plate is arranged at the lower surface of the slab, and used as the form for the placing of concrete. The composite slab performs better than PRC (partial prestressed concrete) slab in safety under construction, durability, and economy. As for load-carrying capacity and durability of the composite slab, it is confirmed by various experiments, and the design method has been prepared. Moreover, construction and repair methods have been prepared, and use of the slab in Japan increased rapidly from 2001. There are several kinds of shear connector in different composite slabs, and this is a constructional feature. In this paper, the background of the development, experiment results, application experience and the features of the composite slabs in Japan are reported.
