Samenvatting

This paper focused on introducing the current status of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) activities in Korea. ITS in Korea was first introduced in early nineties, since then, Korean government puts lots of efforts for flourishing it. Topics for the paper are composed of the Korean ITS Strategic Plan, ITS R&D, and Metropolitan Model Deployment Initiative Projects. For the Strategic Plan, this paper explained direction of revision on the Strategic Plan of 1997 in detail. In addition, user's needs assessment, and development processes were discussed. Newly defined service areas, timetable, and budget were identified in the main body of the paper. One of the main findings in the process of revision of the national strategic plan for the 21st century was that ITS should thoroughly reflect end users' needs in establishing its goals and objectives. For ITS R&D, Korean Government took initiatives, and drove it since 1997. Core technology, system integration, algorithm, and policy are main subjects for ITS R&D. In case of system deployment, authors evaluated that Korea is in the stage of ITS infrastructure development. Currently, metropolitan model deployment initiatives (MMDI) projects are on going, and this paper introduces goal, objective, and scope of MMDI. In conclusion, authors suggest future direction of ITS in developing country. Specifically, importance of identification of user services, and private and public partnership are discussed.
