TRRL is studying factors that influence the amount of cycling in Great Britain. The subject of this report is cycle theft - cited by cycling groups and by authorities elsewhere as inhibiting the choice of using a cycle for at least some types of journey. Some background statistics are given on the extent of cycle theft in Britain today. The police records of just over 1000 cases of cycle theft in the reading area in 1981 have been analysed and a small-scale survey made of cycle parking facilities and habits in some of the locations mentioned frequently in the police records.
