This monograph provides basic information on the design and construction of cycleways, with particular reference to the system installed at Stevenage. The location of cycleways relative to the roads and footpaths and the areas which they connect are described. The system focuses mainly on schools and places of work, starting at the edges of residential areas. The use of underpasses is a special feature of the Stevenage cycleways and these are described in detail. Design features such as gradients, kerb radii, pavement design and lighting are also discussed. Two legal points are noted, the first concerning mopeds' use of cycleways and the second concerning right of way priority at grade with other roads. A final section is added relating to cycle parking. Photographs and diagrams are included to illustrate a number of important points.
