Samenvatting

Twin tyres exert a lower stress on road than single tyres. Higher tyre pressures exert higher stress than low pressures. Road deformations caused by axle loads are both elastic and plastic. In Finland, stresses and strains in surfacing and pavement have been measured on a test road since 1983 for different tyres. Single tyres are 2.3-4 times more aggressive than twin tyres. On twin tyres, load distribution is not equal. Wide single tyres are less aggressive than normal ones. Increase in tyre pressure increases stress on surfacing. It is obvious that existing tyre types and higher tyre pressures reduce vehicle costs but increase road wear. Who pays ?
