The accidents studied occurred in Evanston, Illinois, part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. At the outset it was arranged that the Evanston Police Department would notify the research team when an accident occurred. If the accident met the criteria for inclusion within the study, the team went to the accident scene. At the scene, if at least one accident participant agreed to co-operate, each of the three team members secured data of an assigned kind. Arrangements were then made for a post-accident interview at a future date. During the post-accident interviews and re visits to the location, each team member utillized techniques appropriate to his speciality. The results are summarised in separate reports. Field investigations were carried on during three periods totalling 54 weeks. During intervals between these periods, techniques were reviewed and revised. The research unit responded to a total of 138 accident calls which resulted in 68 cases studied in 43 accidents. These accidents were typical of those occurring in the city. There were no fatal accidents in the city during the period of the study.
