Samenvatting

Data exchange is key to the application of Intelligent Transport Systems. It is no surprise that dedicated technologies and protocols have accompanied the development of ITS solutions from the beginning. Many of these developments were 'islands' that have just recently started to grow together in the framework of national ITS architectures and international cooperation. One of the major tools to address the challenges involved is the step from mere data interfaces to providing so called Web services, where data and corresponding functionality can be made available to other systems viathe internet. This paper assesses and exemplifies the benefits - but alsothe risks and challenges - to be expected from the move from the EuropeanEDIFACT based centre-to-centre standard DATEX towards a web service basedarchitecture called DATEX II.
