Poor cyclist conspicuity is considered to play a major role in a number of crash types. Night time conspicuity bicycle crashes are often of different types, and require different treatments to those that occur during the day. By far the majority of bicycle crashes in South Australia occur during the day. The relative neglect of day-time cyclist conspicuity as a road safety problem is of some interest. The author speculates that is a misplaced notion of blame that is responsible for the neglect of the problem of poor day-time conspicuity. A `cyclist conspicuity' campaign would be expected to have both direct and indirect effects. The direct effect would be a reduced crash rate for those cyclists who wear conspicuous clothing. The indirect effect would be heightening awareness by cyclists that they can easily escape being noticed by drivers. (A)
