Samenvatting

This paper focuses on the market of living and working in the Amsterdam area. This market shows a strong disbalance. Jobs in Amstelveen are mainly filled by employees from elsewhere, whereas the working community of Amstelveen mainly consists of non-residents. If the whole of the working population of Amsterdam would work in the city itself, still some 35.000 non-resident employees would be required in order to fulfil all jobs. The amount of work is not in balance with the sections in which the local population is working. New employment in Amsterdam is mainly created in sections that already need to attract non-residents. Because of the deficiency in somewhat more spacious houses in Amsterdam, a large number of (potential) employees will choose to live outside the town. Given the future developments, it is most likely that the disbalance in the market of living and working will increase. The poor fit of living and working causes relatively long distances between the two. Exactly those locations that already give rise to a lot of commuter traffic, seem to attract new employment. Consequently, the traffic intensity on roads and in public transport will rise, despite all efforts to diminish traffic jams. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E206647.
