In this paper the societal phenomenon of car sharing is dealt with. A description is given of the practical significance of car sharing in the Netherlands at this moment. The `Car Sharing in the Netherlands' evaluation programme is explained. The results of an empirical survey are described, on the basis of a pilot study at a car sharing system in Leyden. It is concluded that car sharing can make a certain contribution to mobility control.
