Samenvatting

In this report a first impetus is given to a model-based calculation of the capacity demand for the transport of goods on the future railway network (the `Infra Explorer'). This impetus consists of a demand analysis of goods transport by rail, and the user-interface for the `Infra Explorer'. According to the demand analysis, goods transport by rail will become increasingly internationalized. The growth of transport in general will also predominantly be in international transport. Two aspects could have beneficial results for goods transport by rail: (1) the increasing use of containers and, in the long term, the use of standard units in continental transport; and (2) the development of Rotterdam as a mainport. development of Rotterdam as a mainport. These two developments, when combined, will cause heavier traffic flows. The user interface describes the successive steps which are followed in the translation of goods flows per customer into the reservation of goods paths per route section per hour. The allocation of the goods flows (trains) to the individual (main) transport axes gives the average number of goods paths per route section per hour. By comparing these desired reservations with the available/reserved capacity of the goods transport, bottlenecks in the network can be identified.
