The Dutch Institute For Road Safety Research SWOV is engaged in research to find a method and a procedure for periodical inspection of cars in the Netherlands, according to EEC specifications. In 1974 a literature review was made on the subject when the law was drafted. 6% of the accidents seem to be caused by defects. This figure does not necessarily mean that only 6% of the cars have defects. A comparison is made between cars involved in accidents and cars that do not have defects. A periodical inspection cannot prevent sudden defects. In addition to periodical inspection more information should be given to drivers on the importance of maintenance. Another possibility is to give more indications of wear and tear within the car, which should be possible with modern technology.
