The Dutch government aims at a transport system which is `sustainable safe'. Amongst other things, the road network will be categorized in a new way and large residential areas will be created. These residential areas will be almost free from through traffic and motorcars should drive slower than 30 km/h. The questions still are what the size of these areas should be and what road network type is suitable. A literature review was carried out in order to answer these questions, especially in relation to four aspects: (1) traffic safety; (2) mobility; (3) environment; and (4) costs. This resulted in a preliminary conclusion about a road structure type which should be preferred. (A)
