Samenvatting

In 1989 the Notification of Intent of the Amsterdam-Utrecht Corridor study was published. The concept of this study (surveying road, railway and waterway together) is similar to the so-called corridor approach, as proposed in the Second Structure Scheme on Transport and Traffic (part D). Its unique contribution is the integral approach, substitution, and an open planning process. Now, 3 years later, the study still has not finished. However, some conclusions can be drawn. The integral approach evidently is the pivot of the corridor approach. Its value is beyond all doubt. Substitution however has become theoretical since the Structure Scheme on Transport and Traffic imposed such tight frameworks to the growth of car mobility: only one growth index is accepted. Finally, the open planning process has been quite successful but it is not unique any more. Still, the initiators believe that the corridor approach is worth imitating. Recommendations for improvements in future studies especially concern the organisation and the way the whole study is subdivided, resulting in another status of the Notification of Intent.
