The Traffic and Transport Division of the province of South Holland has commissioned TNO Institute of Spatial Organization to investigate the mobility characteristics and development in the province of South Holland over the period 1985-1989. A description is given of the aim and approach of the investigation as well as the results of the analysis. This investigation has been done on the basis of the data of the National Travel Survey as made by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The analyses refer to the composition and development of passenger transport in the province in terms of purpose, transport mode, time and other trip characteristics. The investigation distinguishes the following levels of spatial detail: (1) the province of South Holland in its entirety; and (2) sub-areas with the province. Moreover, a comparison has been made with the composition and development of travel in the rest of the Netherlands. Finally, conclusions have been made with respect to the mobility characteristics and development in South Holland.
