This paper gives a short overview of some developments that occur or are likely to occur in the demand for passenger transport in The Netherlands. It appears that these developments are less certain than they were assumed to be in earlier periods. This uncertainty influences the topical research questions faced with today. Also the research methods that are able to answer these questions are subject to change. An indication is given of the main policy questions and research directions. A specific approach that tries to describe macro developments in mobility and incorporate uncertainty is presented in more detail: the 'Mobility Explorer'. A description is given of its history, its main assumptions and the evaluation of its usefulness.
