A clear objective of 25% less traffic accidents by the year 2000 has been set by the 1987-1991 traffic safety programme "more kilometers, less accidents". This means that in the year 1990, there should be 200 fatalities and 1500 hospital patients fewer than in 1985. The programme has two main objectives: (1) to evaluate new ways to obtain the cooperation of citizens and local authorities in the battle to increase traffic safety; and (2) to select a limited number of areas to implement new policy. If special attention is paid to a limited number of schemes then there is a possibility of achieving some measurable results in the next few years.
