The rise or decline of a seaport depends on a host of influencing variables, of which only few are under control of the port authority. In this paper some important trends, threats and opportunities are described. As a consequence of the notion that a port forms only one link in the whole logistical chain, much more attention has to be given to the hinterland, logistical factors and operational and strategically information systems.
