The public transport market: travellers and their travel behaviour The aim of this contribution is the description of a method, which can be used to estimate the individual travel behaviour of transport passengers on a yearly basis. With so called on board surveys on buses and trains a selective sample is obtained. The probability that that an individual is in the sample is proportional to the travel frequency of the subject. So, public transport travellers with a high frequency have a higher probability to be sampled. In this paper we present a sampling method which takes this selectivity problem into account. This paper is based on research which was carried out for the Dutch Railways (NS). Based on this both travellers and their travel behaviour is described. (Author/publisher)
