Samenvatting
In the Netherlands there is the tendency that the Randstad will lose its rural character. Some figures are presented regarding the recent development with cartograms, from which appears the attraction of the central part of the Randstad. Open spaces at the meso-level are difficult to protect from the urban sprawl, mainly because the communication lines cross the area. Methods for physical planning under European conditions are discussed.
