The aim of this study is to describe the relation between the road characteristics, the (speed-related) traffic behaviour, and the accidents occurring on 80 km/h roads. For that purpose, three theoretical analyses were performed; the results and implications of these analyses are presented. Among other things, the results of the normative task analysis were combined with an error classification, based on a psychological model of human driving behaviour. The analysis results in a systematically ordered description of the errors that may occur while performing a particular aspect of the driving task, and that may cause the different types of accident.
